Port of Milford Haven & The Aloud Charity
The Challenge
- To encourage school pupils to consider a career in the marine renewables energy sector.
- To promote the benefits of the Pembroke Dock Marine project to the local community.
- To promote environmental messages in a creative and engaging way.
- To create a digital legacy that the community can be proud of.
The Solution
As part of its promotion of the Pembroke Dock Marine project, Port of Milford Haven commissioned The Aloud Charity to deliver a song-writing project. Aloud commissioned a professional songwriter to compose a high-quality chorus, linked to environmental sustainability. This was followed by a song-writing workshop with music students at local secondary school, Ysgol Harri Tudur to create a catchy verse. A film of the song was created, featuring the young people and members of the community, which was shared across digital platforms. The Port also secured investment in the project from its partners Celtic Sea Power, Marine Energy Wales and ORE Catapult, and CultureStep strengthened the project by contributing to the songwriter’s fee and recording equipment. Funding was also used to enhance the accessibility of the film, subsidising the costs of BSL interpretation, translation and subtitles.
The Results
Aloud worked with 40 pupils at Ysgol Harri Tudur, as well as 50 members of the community to create and perform the music video. Both parties were delighted with the level of engagement from businesses and individuals in Pembroke Dock.
The film was shared on social media platforms, promoting the development of the Pembroke Dock Marine Project and highlighting the importance of sustainable energy. It had a total estimated reach of 6,300 people online.
CultureStep investment funded a second day of workshops, achieving valuable engagement, enhanced song writing quality and a deeper understanding of sustainable energy. The scheme also supported the creation of a superior film as the end product.
The Endorsement
The main benefits to the Port have been immersing ourselves within the local community and building stronger relationships. We were able to highlight our development plans and the associated career opportunities in the renewables industry to local school pupils, as well as members of the Pembroke Dock community. It was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to one of our core values which is sustainability. Working with a well-known, reputable charity gave us a chance to create a unique digital legacy which the Port and the other business partners are very proud of. It was fantastic to raise the profile of the Pembroke Dock Marine project and the opportunities being created within the local area.

The main benefits to Aloud have been to engage more widely with members of the community in West Wales. The partnership gave Aloud the financial stability to invest in professional recording equipment to produce a high-quality result. The project also provided some reputational value through positive association with a large corporation and helped Aloud raise awareness for the new West Wales choirs to potential participants. The project has helped Aloud develop a new relationship with Ysgol Harri Tudur for future partnership working.
